WHO COULD RETURN THE DARKHAWK?
The cover to Darkhawk#1 I drew this cover nearly 16 years ago, amazing how time flies. HERE is a bigger scan just for you.
It seems the right amount of time has passed since the book was canceled so now I get a lot of people mentioniong to me how much they enjoyed the book and my work on it. Guys like Brian Lee O'Malley and Jim Rugg to mention two. Funny, as I never got the impression people cared all that much, but those were very different days, pre-speculator book to the beginning of that boom.
Marvel in the early 90's was still launching a lot of new books, something like one or two every month it seemed and DH found a nitch in that market both companies would die for today numbers wise. I think many kids who now are in their mid to late 20's grew up reading Dh and many books like it, they could start with a #1 issue and follow along. In today's market, that seems to be something gone by the wayside unfortunately. I was never that hot on the teen angst aspect of the book as I found it too similar to Spidey but Danny Fingeroth , the writer and I did have some fun...yes you could still have fun then. This was back when guset starrring spidey,Wolverine or the Punisher would boost sales...
I left the book with issue#25 and it continued on after I left for a while. I never really looked at those issues. Over thne past few years Danny and i have talked about doing another try on the character, but I wonder if fans would dig it?
Cool! I believe I have that 1st issue tucked away somewhere. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
ReplyDelete$1.00! Wow... now them were the days ;)
ReplyDelete$1.00! No kidding. My first comic was a 35 cent Marvel Team Up with Doc Strange and Spidey.
ReplyDeleteThat Darkhawk cover definitely brings me back. I believe that it's snuggly between my Cloak and Dagger and Daredevil comics.
I think it would make for a wonderful revamp in this day and age.
I started collecting comic about the same time you were doing Dark Hawk. The art work was very moody and enganging. I picked it up right after Venom was introduced on the island. I think your artwork back then was more realistic back then.
ReplyDeleteI started with #1 and stopped at #25 myself. I felt torn without you on the book. I didn't know at the time how to react to artist changes simply that the book just didn't feel right afterwards.
ReplyDeleteIf it were to come back to the shelves I'd hope you'd do it the honor of picking back up on it.
Darkhawk will show up in a new series next year called The Loners. It's a spinoff of Runaways.
ReplyDeletePLease bring back Darkhawk and have him just kick everyones ass. The world needs Darkhawk more now then ever. I was there from the start with darkhawk and there is no reason he should not be in the scene!!

Wow. Just Wow. I remember purchasing issue number 1. I am now 26 and I still consider chris Powell and Darkhawk to be my favorite character ever. I remember how bummed I was when you left the comic and how "Jipped" I felt with the new art in the book. I LOVED portal and Venom in the book (back when venom WAS venom) I have many times found myself doodling pictures of Darkhawk on paperwork and reading old back issues. I was soo unbelievably excited when I found this Blog, my wife thinks I am king of the dorks. haha Finally I am able to tell you how much this book meant to me. This is a character that should totally be put out again BUT only if YOU do the art. I wish I had some original artwork for my office walls. Thanks again for creating a comic book fan out of me and Thank you for your time and efforts on this amazing book. I really hope that we will Chris Powell grab onto his Amulet and undergo that awesome transformation again in the near future!!!!! -Jeff Blinkinsop

I know this is a few years late but I just want to pay my respects, I loved this book! This was one of my starter collections and frankly Darkhawk has been my favorite comic heros! After the series ended I stopped collecting comics...But now 19 years later I'm now 27 and I started to research what became of the Darkhawk. What do you know he now has a 2 part series to the War of Kings so I started collecting once again! I'm curious to know more about Darkhawks past so far I'm hooked!
