BOZZED

I came across this scan today while backing up some stuff off the old hard drive, it's a late 80's drawing I did of my pal Bret Blevin's character BOZZ, a mini-series he did for Marvel. I was totally into trying to use a rag to ink the sky which I had recently learned from my friend Ricardo Villagran.

The rag idea is really cool. I love when things have those different, unusual textures. Do you have any idea how Craig Thompson gets the textures he does? It looks sort of like drybrush, but I don't think it is.

I'm about to start inking some pages I just finished pencilling, and I'll be trying that rag thing somewhere in there. Thanks for posting it!

I'm not sure about what Thompson does as I don't have examples of his work on hand, but experiment with things. try sponges, or even old leather book covers, different types of cloth and see what you can get texture wise.

It's been driving me nuts trying to figure out his tricks. . .I'll scan some stuff and post it at my blog and see if you can figure it out, eh?

I got the new DRAW! yesterday and really enjoyed the Steve Rude interview. I love his artwork and was fascinated to read Toth's attack on his Johnny Quest--that was pretty cranky even for Toth, whose letters are so stream-of-consciousness that I just can't follow them usually.

Is it just me or does Steve Rude say your name quite often as he's talking with you? It seemed like a lot of those replies were "glad you asked that, Mike," or "You know, Mike, I look at it differently," and so forth. Anyway, great interview, very informative, and great choice of illustrations to accompany it.

Thanks. The scary thing for me is that drawing is almost 20 years old...

that is pretty neat looking ink technique for the sky. Do you still ever use it?

Hey Mike, i bet you can't draw like this: http://pwp1.tripod.com/howtodraw.html

Very good rendition of Bret Blevins!
There was a period in the late 80's where the big two were trying new things in order to keep up with the up and coming independents. THE BOZZ CHRONICLES was one of those, along with Dakota North and 'Mazing Man. It's a damn shame none of them made it past a year (although, truth be told, Bozz was actually a mini-series)). And of course the indies fizzled in less than five years...

Lud, thanks, I was sharing Al Williamson's stodio with Bret at that time, so it was fun to watch him do bozz.

T, Yes I still use a rag from time to time or a piece of foam, like I did for the spattery effect on the Turtles page I posted. And man, hahah, no I can't draw like that and jesus can't either! :-)

Forgive us our art sins at the hour of our death!
